In the
beginning...
It all started back in 1989.
William DeMott started training on Johnny Rodz' Wrestling
School. He started wrestle around in the Indy federations. In
early 1992, DeMott became Crash the Terminator and defeated
Steve Strong in Puerto Rico for the American Wrestling
Federation Heavyweight title. Later in 1992, Crash the
Terminator W*NG in Japan. Here he won the Tag Team titles along
with Mr.Pogo. Crash competed in W*NG for quite some time, and in
1993 he won a 16 man tournament to become the W*NG Heavyweight
Champion. Crash later became more extreme as he faced
Leatherface in a barbed wire baseball bat match in the extreme
IWA in Japan. Crash the Terminator returned to the United States
to ECW where he had a short stint. Later, Crash came to
Pennsylvania Championship Wrestling where he won a battle royal
to become PCW Heavyweight Champion. DeMott already had a pretty
impressive title reign.
World
Championship Wrestling
Bill's career took a serious
turn, when he entered World Championship Wrestling in September
of 1995. Kevin Sullivan had requested DeMott for the company. He
started wrestling in WCW as the Man of Questions and the
Laughing Man, which both were weird gimmicks. He wrestled on WCW
Saturday Night and on WCW's Monday Night Nitro. DeMott slowly
became a familiar face in the company and got known as Hugh
Morrus, which sounded like "humorous" when it was mentioned.
Hugh Morrus impressed lots of guys with his moonsault called No
Laughing Matter, due to his big size and weight of almost 300
pounds. Morrus defeated guys like Chris Kanyon in dark matches
and on Saturday Night. He decided to set his sight on the WCW
Tag Team titles and formed a team with Joey Maggs. However,
Morrus changed his partner to the huge Scott Norton. Morrus and
Norton though, did never win WCW Tag Team titles and split up.
In the fall of 1996, Hugh Morrus was invited to a Japan/USA All
Star Tournament along with such stars as Ric Flair, Arn
Anderson, Stephen Regal, Sting and Lex Luger in Japan.
The Dungeon
of Doom
Hugh Morrus became a big heel
when he joined Jimmy Harts, Dungeon of Doom in 1996. The mission
of the group was to kill Hulkamania and Hulk Hogan who was the
biggest babyface in the company. However, Morrus' role in the
faction was not big though as he joined it really late, when the
group was splitting up, and Hogan became heel with the nWo.
Morrus went back to his low carder role on the weekly WCW Monday
Nitro and Saturday Night. Then, on September 22, Morrus was
defeated by the rookie, Bill Goldberg to start the biggest
winning streak in sports entertainment. Morrus had a few more
matches with Goldberg, but were never able to defeat the big
monster. Hugh Morrus got a short-lived push when pinning guys
like La Parka, Psichosis, Glacier, Mike Enos, Sick Boy and
others. In 1999, DeMott's contract was running out with the
company, but the WCW wanted Hugh Morrus for three more years, so
he signed a new contract.
The First
Family
Hugh Morrus became a new man.
He started using weapons and competing in the WCW's Hardcore
league. Jimmy Hart became interested in Morrus and wanted him
for his new faction, which basically was a team of lunatics
using weapons to bruise their opponents. Jimmy Hart added the
likes of Brian Knobbs, Jerry Flynn and The Barbarian. One night
on WCW Monday Nitro, Morrus was about to finish off Van Hammer
by giving him the No Laughing Matter through a table, but
president of WCW, Ric Flair, came out and told Morrus that if he
ever used hardcore in a WCW ring again, he was fired. The Morrus
was attacked from behind by Van Hammer with a table and lost the
match. This made another hardcore wrestler, Hak (Sandman), to do
something nobody else had ever done. He invited everybody who
had the guts, to a non sanctioned Hardcore Junkyard Invitational
match in Ft.Lauderdale Florida at Bash at the Beach 1999. When
the match debuted on July 11, Morrus made a huge impact by
tossing several wrestlers into cars, even leaping from one car
to another with an elbow drop. Morrus didn't win the match
though. His hardcore rival, Fit Finlay, did. The First Family
started feuding with the heel faction The Revolution and the
First Family started to become popular. At WCW Fall Brawl 1999,
Hugh Morrus and Brian Knobbs managed to defeat Revolution
members, Shane Douglas and Dean Malenko by DQ. The First Family
broke up, shortly after. Hugh Morrus disappeared for a while as
Brian Knobbs started competing for the WCW Hardcore title. In
2000, Hugh Morrus returned, squashing wrestlers on Nitro and
Thunder. The fans hated Morrus for his angry attitude. But then,
the new beginning for WCW came... and the new beginning for Bill
DeMott came...
The Misfits
in Action
On April 10, 2000, Vince Russo
and Eric Bischoff took over World Championship Wrestling. The
show opened with Russo and Bischoff in the ring, with a lot of
young and underrated wrestlers in the ring, including Morrus.
Russo said that it was time for the old guys (Hulk Hogan, Sting,
Luger, Savage, Nash, Flair) to step aside and let the new
generation of wrestlers take over. Of course, the so called New
Blood became a heel faction. Hugh Morrus lost a couple of
matches and was fired by Vince Russo because he had disappointed
him. However, the next many weeks Morrus showed up at ringside
with all of the other young guys Russo had fired (Lash LeRoux,
Chavo Guerrero, Van Hammer) and helped out the good guys
(Millionaires Club) against the New Blood. At Slamboree 2000,
Russo wanted to make sure that Morrus never messed with his
business again, so he booked him against U.S. Champion Scott
Steiner in a title match. Before the match, Morrus said he
wanted to be known by his real name. Hugh E. Rection. The
Misfits in Action (Lash LeRoux, Chavo Guerrero, Van Hammer) was
at ringside, and by the end, the MIA broke into a huge brawl
with Vince Russo and Eric Bischoff's security team. Rection
tapped out to the Steiner Recliner and lost the match. Steiner
started beating Rection, but then Booker T entered the ring and
saved Rection. Booker T was fired from WCW, but reappeared as
one of the Misfits. The MIA was dressed in military clothes and
changed names. Chavo Guerrero became Lieutenant Loco. Lash
LeRoux became Corporal Cajun. Van Hammer became Major Stash.
Hugh E. Rection became Captain Rection. Booker T became G.I.Bro.
The MIA started feuding with the Filthy Animals and Lieutenant
Loco ended up winning the Cruiserweight title. G.I.Bro left the
faction when he was offered to return to WCW as Booker T.
Captain Rection took over the leadership and became General
Rection.
General
Rection
The MIA ended up becoming major
babyfaces. General Rection slowly came into the spotlight of WCW
which he had been waiting for since he arrived in 1995. At the
same time, a new wrestler, Lance Storm, debuted. All he did for
many months was beating American wrestlers, talking trash about
America and telling Americans to come to Canada. General Rection
wanted to defend his pride as American and the Misfits in Action
became Made in America, changing Major Stash with Sergeant
A-Wall (The Wall). For three months, MIA and Team Canada (Lance
Storm, Elix Skipper and Hacksaw Jim Duggan) feuded. This rivalry
led to General Rection finally winning a title in the WCW. The
United States Heavyweight Championship, which he won by
defeating both Lance Storm and Hacksaw Jim Duggan in a handicap
match at WCW Halloween Havoc 2000. The following night on Nitro,
Rection was granted with a tribute segment. Many wrestlers,
valets and referee came out to pay their tribute as the fans
chanted "USA" over and over again. Rection said that he tributed
his title win to all of the midcarders that has wrestled in WCW.
Suddenly, Goldberg came out. Goldberg respected Rection, telling
him that the Goldberg winning streak had to start somewhere.
DeMott was respected by the wrestlers and the fans.
The Invasion
on WWE
Rection lost the U.S. title to
Lance Storm, however, shortly after he won new gold in WCW.
Rection won the WCW Tag Team Championship with Alex Wright in
Germany. This made some tension with the MIA. Rection also
managed to win the U.S. Title back from Lance Strom at WCW
Mayhem. He defended the title for two months, feuding with
Douglas who he defeated at Starrcade. Rection lost his U.S.
Title to Shane Douglas at WCW Sin, and the MIA split up. Rection
became Hugh Morrus again, feuding with his former tag team
partners Chavo Guerrero and the Wall. Hugh Morrus defeated The
Wall at Superbrawl: Revenge 2001. The WCW though was at the edge
of going bankrupt. However, the competing company, World
Wrestling Entertainment purchased the WCW. At the last episode
of WCW, WWE owner, Vince McMahon came out and said that no
former WCW superstar would have a chance in the WWE, because he
had fired them all. But then, Shane McMahon came out and
announced that HE had bought the WCW to beat his daddy. No sign
of WCW until June where Kane and Christian faced off at WWE RAW
as Hugh Morrus suddenly charged the ring and gave Christian a No
Laughing Matter then escaping through the crowd. That was just
one of many segments of WCW stars invading WWE. The WCW alliance
even joined forces with the ECW superstars to become known as
The Alliance. Hugh Morrus was a loyal member to the Alliance and
won a match along with Stasiak and Chris Kanyon at the Invasion
pay per view over WWE stars, Big Show, Billy Gunn and Albert.
But the Alliance did not succeed in taking over WWE. This made
it a hard time for Morrus who was unpopular with the WWE
superstars. Morrus and Chavo Guerrero started sucking up to
Vince McMahon, but he instead fired them. But Shane McMahon and
Stephanie then sold their stockings in WWE to a huge legend and
former WCW star, Ric Flair! Ric Flair gave every single Alliance
member a chance in WWE. Hugh Morrus returned and was drafted to
the SmackDown! brand. But in May, something bad happened to
DeMott. He was seriously injured in a Motorcycle Accident and
was forced to leave the company for six months. In the meantime,
Hugh Morrus became Bill DeMott on WWE's Tough Enough II which
aired on MTV. Here he was the hardass trainer. When Tough Enough
ended, DeMott returned to the ring...
The end of
Hugh Morrus...
Hugh Morrus wrestled as Morrus
for some time losing lots of matches on house shows and on
Velocity, but in November, he changed. Bill DeMott arrived in
the WWE on SmackDown! brutally destroying lots of superstars
including Shannon Moore, Funaki and Crash Holly. DeMott was just
known as himself and got a huge push. DeMott was not the
happy-go-lucky Hugh Morrus any longer. DeMott's push didn't lead
to anything though as WWE sends him to wrestle on Velocity.
DeMott decided to retire from the wrestling business, leaving a
huge mark on the SmackDown! roster after several victories. He
became an announcer with Josh Matthews on WWE Velocity.
Throughout most of 2004, Bill called the action along with Josh
Matthews, but in late 2004, WWE announced Tough Enough season 4.
Bill DeMott, along with Al Snow, trained the new competitors to
find out who was Tough Enough. Bill didn't return to the
announcing booth on Velocity. He continued training, and will be
assigned the job as the head trainer on the new WWE development
area Deep South Wrestling.
